- Analytic ability, proven particularly by a first class honours degree in mathematics, and by consultancy work and employment
- Wide knowledge of the voluntary and community sector, particularly across Tyne & Wear and Northumberland, derived from experience as a funder of the sector and from consultancy

- Good academic and practical understanding of equality and diversity and the relationships between diversity, discrimination and disadvantage
- Knowledge and experience of the complex relationships between voluntary, community, public and private sector organisations
